You found a karate club in Kartal you like, checked the schedule, maybe even watched a class from the side of the mat. Then the practical question shows up: how do you actually get there twice a week, especially if nobody in the house drives, or the car is busy with something else that evening.

Kartal is on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, and it is generally well served by public transport. A trip that looks quick on a map can take noticeably longer once real evening traffic or a wait for a connection is added in, and it is far better to find that out on a dry run than on the evening of the first class, with a nervous child and the clock ticking.

A few things worth checking on that first attempt:

• the exact address in the app, not just the neighbourhood name
• the real day and time you would be travelling, since evenings can look different from the middle of the day
• whether the last stretch on foot feels manageable for whoever is making the trip, including after dark in winter
• a backup option, such as a taxi or a lift from someone else, for the days the first plan falls through
